It has been 11 great years, and my car has brought me lots of memories. I would like to share one of those memories with you today.
Five years ago, the great comedian Dave Chappelle was in town for three nights of stand-up comedy at the Punchline in San Francisco. After hours of waiting in the standby line, my buddy and I were able to get tickets to the show. It was a night that I’ll never forget, as it was five hours of pure comedy genius! As you can imagine, there is just so much material that a standup comedian can provide for five hours, that Dave started chatting with the audience. One of the topics that came up was the “Price is Right,” as the show was looking for a new host to take over for Bob Barker. An audience member suggested that Dave should audition for the job. Dave was flattered at the suggestion, and mentioned that he had never met anyone who’s ever been on the “Price is Right.” My friend saw the perfect opportunity to yell out that I won a car on the show. Dave was amazed, and he asked what other prizes did I win. So I ran down the rest of the list; a couch, a chandelier, a grandfather clock, a year supply of eggs, and a dinette set. I told him that I still had the videotape (remember, I was on the show back in 2001) and he asked if I could borrow it.
So, the next night I show up and hand Dave’s manager the tape before the show. Once the doors opened at 10pm, I was escorted to the front row and waited as the venue started filling up. Soon after, Dave walks out onto the stage and immediately informs the crowd that there’s a celebrity in the house. Little did I know, he was talking about me! He asked to me stand up and wave to the crowd, and all I could hear was the crowd saying, “Who the heck is that guy??” So Dave informed them that I was on the “Price is Right.” He went down the list of items that I won, and soon after, I was part of his standup act. The joke went as follows:
“It was a big night for Hector, as he was getting prepared to go out on his date. He freshens up, and he rides off in his “Price is Right Car” to pick up his date. They go out for dinner and drinks, and then drive back to his place. Once they arrive, they sit down on his “Price is Right Couch” to watch a movie. So Hector dims the lights on his “Price is Right Chandelier” and they watch the movie until they fall asleep. The next morning, Hector and his date are awaken by his “Price is Right Grandfather Clock,” and tells his date to wake up and make him some “Price is Right Eggs” and set them on his “Price is Right Dinette Set!”
That, my friends, is pure comedy genius!
