It was no doubt sad to see the season come to an end on Saturday, but I am really proud of our boys for fighting until the bitter end. Three close games at the Cow Palace ended with us pulling the goalie and a chance to tie the game at the end, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Now that the off-season has set in for a bit, I’ve had some time to reflect on what we’ve accomplished in our first season. Reaching the playoffs was a main goal for us, so I’m glad we had a chance to fulfill that. It was also great to see a few of our guys, like Belan, Sivak and Dean get a shot at the American Hockey League. They worked hard all season long and they deserved to make the jump.
Off the ice, the entire organization was blown away by the support we received from the fans. The atmosphere in the Cow Palace when it was filled was beyond what we could have imagined. Everyone from the season ticket holders to the sponsors to the partial plan holders to the Matadors and to those who came for just one or two games you are what made this season such a success.
When Elouise and I first walked into the Cow Palace in April of 2011 we could never have imagined how much energy could return to this historic building. Our expectations were far exceeded in 2012-13.
But as we close the chapter on Year One, we already begin to look ahead to Year Two. For those at the playoffs games, you already saw a glimpse of what we have in store for the 2013-14 season. A couple of ice level suites, an expanded beer garden and a kids zone are just a few of the things on tap for next season.
Even though the Kelly Cup Playoffs haven’t completed yet, the league is already hard at work putting together next season’s schedule, which should be out shortly after the finals in mid-May.
Just like the players, we hope you give yourselves a little break to recharge the batteries for the next season, we anticipate will be even better than our inaugural season.
GO BULLS GO!
